• 10 Tips for the Lazy Environmentalist

Nowadays, most of us recycle and know enough to not pour motor oil down the sink. Here are a few EASY things you may not have thought of, to make being green that much simpler.

Drink from a refillable water bottle, instead of disposable plastic water bottles.

I can put away some water, so sticking to the reusable sort can save about 6 plastic bottles per day!

Turn your car off when you’re not driving.

If you’re waiting for someone in the car, you’re in the bank drive-through or have pulled over to check directions, turn off the car. Sitting with the car on and idling is going to release unnecessary pollution.

    Use that cruise control.

If driving on flat roads, use your cruise control. In addition to the obvious addition to the laziness factor, you get better fuel economy, which translates to a much lower environmental impact. If you're able, walk or ride your bike, instead of driving!

Keep those tires at proper inflation.

When that tire pressure gauge is on point, so is your fuel economy. Check your driver’s side door or owner’s manual for the right pressure for your car. Most cars will be between 32 and 35 psi.

When going to a restaurant to eat, bring your own container for leftovers.

I don’t know about you, but I RARELY finish my entrée when out to dinner. Instead of using more plastic or creating more trash, bring a previously used takeout container or Tupperware from home to use for what’s left of your meal.

Unplug electronics chargers when not in use.

Why? It seems odd, but they still draw power, even when not juicing up your device.

“If it’s yellow, let it mellow”.

It’s just pee, ya’ll. Don’t be afraid to go a few times before flushing. But, if it’s brown, you might wanna flush it down.

Carry a collapsible shopping bag in your purse or glove compartment.

I don’t always realize I need things until I am already out of the house. Even when I do… I sometimes forget to grab my grocery bags before leaving.

    Bad. I know.

I found a collapsible shopping bag about a year ago and carry it with me everywhere! If I find myself at the store, I have at least 1 bag that’s not paper or plastic. Its home is my purse, so I have no chance of forgetting it.

Along the same lines, remember to take any plastic bags you may have back to the store for recycling!

    Check your exfoliator.

Many exfoliating beauty products contain plastic “micro beads” that get washed down the drain and inevitably into the ocean. They end up on the sea floor or in the tummies of fish, where they NEVER biodegrade. These materials are most often identified as “polyethylene” on product labels. Choose products with natural exfoliants, such as salts, fruit seeds and nut hulls. You know... products from

    companies like 1121! *wink*

    Go Meatless!

Even if it’s just one Meatless Monday per week, cutting back on the amount of animal protein in our diets makes a hugely positive impact on the environment. Meat production gobbles natural resources and pollutes our air and water.

So, there you go! All of these are small things we can all work into our routines that add up to enormous benefits for our big, blue home!
